General Information

The Chevrolet Camaro was introduced in 1967 in direct response to the Ford Mustang.  Thanks to Ralph Nader’s misinformation, Chevrolet’s previous sporty compact, the Corvair, had never really lived up to its expectations.  It was also costly to build, since it shared so little with other Chevys.  Even so, Chevrolet didn’t immediately discontinue the Corvair after the Camaro arrived, instead allowing it to quietly fade away while the more conventional new car got all the attention.  The Camaro was dimensionally almost identical to the Mustang and Barracuda, with a similar base price, but it was arguably better looking than either rival and available with a wider range of optional equipment.  It should therefore be no surprise that it sold very well.  220,000 were built in 1967, rising to 240,000 by ’69.  One of the options on the list was the Rally Sport package, an appearance group whose most obvious feature was a pair of headlights that disappeared behind electrically operated doors.

This 1969 Rally Sport has been frame-off restored and heavily customized in the Pro Touring style.  It features a 555 cid big bock crate motor that was professionally built by Pat Musi, and it produces some 650 horsepower while breathing through its Edelbrock intake.  It is mated to a 5-speed transmission and 12-bolt rear end, while huge custom disc rakes rein in the power.  The awesome engine lives in an ultra clean engine bay with custom wiring, plumbing, and a smoothed firewall.  Comfort and convenience features include power steering, brakes, door locks, windows, and air conditioning.  The interior has been custom upholstered in leather.  When this car was purchased, the proceeds from the sale benefitted the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation.  Tammy Allen's sister is a breast cancer survivor, so the cause is close to her heart.  She purchased this car at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction.
