Fleetwood Imperial Sedan

General Information

Year:   1939

In 1939 Cadillac offered its V8-powered cars in three levels: the ‘entry-level’ Series 61, mid-range Series Sixty Special, and the Series 75, which was second only to the exclusive Series 90 V-16 in prestige.  Only 2,069 Series 75 cars were produced, but the two lesser series were less expensive and correspondingly more popular - both sold over 5,000 copies that year.  All three series were powered by Cadillac’s 346 cid V-8, but the 61 and 60 Special only produced 135 horsepower compared with 140 for the Series 75, which had a slightly higher compression ratio.  The 61 and the 60 Special also rode on a shorter wheelbase and were not quite as well-equipped.  Fleetwood, GM’s most prestigious in-house coachbuilder, built all Series 75 bodies.

This car is one of 638 Imperial Sedans built for 1939, and it was delivered new to Capital Cadillac in Washington, D.C.  Options include a division window, side mounts, running boards, heater, radio, jump seats, fog lights, and Fulton sun shield.  The car has been mostly restored with a few updates, including vintage air conditioning and a 12-volt electrical system with turn signals.  The interior has been completely reupholstered.  Documentation is extensive and includes the original Cadillac build sheet.  Tammy Allen acquired this car at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction.
